Some travelers crossing American borders, whether by car or plane, are reporting inspections of their devices by United States Customs and Border Protection agents, demanding that they turn over both their device and password.

The legality of such searches, and the extent to which they’ll be carried out, are currently unclear. What is clear, however, is that they are happening and we’ve received questions from concerned travelers who use RoboForm to manage their online accounts. As such, we want to take a moment to address those concerns.

One of the benefits of RoboForm Everywhere is that you can always access your data from our secure cloud.

While there are more complex ways to encrypt your phone, the most effective and practical way to protect the privacy of your RoboForm data while traveling is to uninstall Roboform before you leave, and then reinstall when you’ve reached your destination or returned home.

If RoboForm is not on your device, an agent would be unable to demand you turn over your Master Password, and subsequently be unable to access your data. However, be sure your Master Password is memorized or secured somewhere you’ll be able to reliably access it again.

If you have any additional questions or concerns don’t hesitate to reach out to us via our online support system or Facebook and Twitter. Your security is our top priority.
