Unique Passwords: Why You Need Them for Each Login

The Importance of Using Unique Passwords

Using unique passwords for each website that you login to is more important now than ever.  We are seeing more and more hacks and security breaches on major websites like LivingSocial and Bank of America and as a result, when one site is compromised, it often leads to individual breaches on other websites.  Having secure passwords should be a priority, but making them unique to each login is just as important.

As RoboForm VP Bill Carey pointed out in his interview with Biz Report, most users cannot remember more than 3 to 5 strong passwords at a time.  As a result, rather than using unique passwords, many people tend to either reuse their passwords on multiple sites or use slight variations.  While it might not be feasible to remember a unique and secure password for 20 or 30 different logins, using a password manager like RoboForm makes this possible.

Think of internet passwords like keys- they should be unique for each secure place that you need to get into.  Just like you wouldn’t have the same key for your car, house, office, safety deposit box and shed; you shouldn’t “share” your passwords between any sites, no matter how unrelated they may seem.

Generating Unique Passwords

Remember, RoboForm can randomly generate unique passwords for you using the generate feature.  However, if you’d like to do it yourself, here are some tips:

  • Passwords should be at least 8 characters long
  • Passwords should never contain a word that is in the dictionary- try substituting a “1″ for an “i” or a “zero” for an “o”
  • Include at least one special character in your password
  • Use both uppercase and lowercase letters

Remember: in the end, you are responsible for your own online security!

Using Effective Passwords to Protect Your Business

What You Can Do to Make Your Passwords More Secure

Recently, RoboForm’s Bill Carey sat down with The Data Center Journal to discuss how creating effective passwords can help protect your business from intrusions.  Here are some key takeaways from the interview:

  • A hacker can crack a lowercase, 6 character password in about 10 minutes.  Adding an uppercase character along with numbers and symbols can increase that time to up to 18 days.
  • Substituting a number for a letter, such as a “1″ for an “i”, can significantly increase the security of a password.
  • Each online account that you have should have it’s own unique password.  Using the same password on multiple sites, no matter how strong it may be, increases the likelihood of getting hacked.
  • As a business owner or manager, it is important to hold your employees accountable for the passwords that they create.  Remember, a breach of just one user in a system can have ramifications for the entire company.

Fed Hack Highlights Importance of Unique Passwords, Password Managers

Federal Reserve Hack Highlights Importance of Unique Passwords and Password Managers

This weekend, the Federal Reserve became the latest high profile subject of a password hacking attack.  According to InformationWeek.com’s article, about the attack, over 4,000 bank executive’s private information was stolen from the Fed’s computers.

Unique, safe passwords could have reduced the impact of the password hacking attack this weekend on The Federal Reserve.

The data that was “dumped” by Anonymous contains 4,600 sets of people’s names, email addresses, institutions, as well as their log-ins and their salted and hashed password, including the salt that was added to the passwords.  This should make it fairly easy for any interested cryptography hobbyist to crack these passwords.  We will probably see a few info-graphics in the next days that document the average strength of these passwords, the most common phrases, etc.

Why “Safe” Passwords Aren’t Really Safe

This attack once again highlights the importance of not only safe passwords, but unique passwords.  Even the safest password can be hacked within a few days, and an average one in a few hours at best.  Once a log-in and password combination has been compromised, it is only a mater of time until hackers will try to log in to hundreds of popular websites with it.

This shows that even very strong passwords won’t keep you completely safe.  They only buy you time that you can use to limit the damage.

Unique Passwords Are The Only truly Safe Option

It is very common to use different passwords for different “security levels”.  Most people will have one password that they use for their online banking, their insurance’s online service, and maybe their health plan’s website.  A less complex password might be used for their email account and other personal accounts.  And then there is the weak, easy to remember password you need to enter on all those websites that you had to sign up for, but never planned to entrust with any personal information.

Now, if one of these three passwords is compromised, you only have a few hours to change your password on all your accounts that you used it for.  If you don’t want to obsessively follow hackers’ twitter accounts and jump out of bed in the middle of the night to change your passwords, you really should use a unique password for each account.  Password managers like RoboForm make it easy to generate unique, complex passwords and safely store them for you.

That way, all you need to do when the next big hack comes around – and it will – is to change your password for that one account.  And since that password is unique, you can do that comfortably in the morning, when you hear about it in the news.  Give RoboForm a try for FREE, for your sleep’s sake.

How To Create Safe Passwords That Are Easy To Remember

Are Long Pass-Phrases Safe Passwords?

Last week InformationWeek.com ran an interesting article on how to create safe passwords in their security section.  A recent study from Carnegie Mellon University examined the relationship of grammar and safe passwords.  Long passwords containing several words, or pass-phrases,  are assumed to be safer and harder to crack, generally speaking.  While pass-phrases are easier to remember than random passwords, they have several drawbacks.

Safe Passwords need to be random and unique.

How long would it take to crack your password?

Modern password cracking programs are able to attack pass-phrases by using combinations of words from the dictionary. This makes pass-phrases that are grammatically correct, and hence easy to remember, more vulnerable to cracking algorithms.  As Carnegie Mellon’s researchers found, passwords are more secure if they violate grammar rules.

Considering that password cracking tools and algorithms are constantly evolving, this is not a surprise. The researchers built their own grammar-aware password cracker, as common cracking tools are unaware of it, and could break grammatically correct, presumably safe passwords relatively easily.

Commonly available password cracking algorithms won’t struggle with long, presumably safe passwords following grammar rules either, though.  Adverbs are very common in English, and passwords containing them are inherently less safe, simply based on their prevalence in previously decrypted passwords.

So how do you create safe passwords that are easy to remember?

The inconvenient truth is that you can’t.  Every relationship between characters in a password or words in a pass-phrase that helps you to remember it can be exploited to crack it. The toughest passwords are 10 characters or more long, unique, and completely random.  Unfortunately, that makes them impossible to remember for normal humans.

How can you conquer this quagmire and protect all your online accounts with unique and safe passwords?

Use a password manager like RoboForm. It creates random, completely safe passwords and stores them for you. In order to use them, all you need to do is remember one master password, which you can make as safe as you can remember.  And with RoboForm Everywhere, you will always have access to all your passwords, no matter where you are.  Try It For Free Today!

New Year’s Resolution: Use better password management

In the past few years, we’ve seen some of the biggest computer attacks in history. Yahoo had half a million passwords stolen. LinkedIn: 6.5 million passwords. Sony PlayStation Network: 77 million passwords, full names, email addresses, mailing addresses, birth dates  purchase history, and credit card numbers. When big name companies fail to adhere to basic security principles, it’s up to individuals to protect themselves. Only those with Zen-like password management can truly keep their online accounts safe. Make a resolution to master your passwords in 2013:

  • Don’t write down passwords.
  • Use different passwords for each account.
  • Use strong passwords.
  • Read network security news.
  • Use a password manager.

Good password disciple will transform you into a security ninja, quick to respond in a crisis. Follow these precepts into the New Year and enjoy online tranquility.

The Tao cannot be written.

Stop with the Post-It notes. These handy colorful slips are the downfall of many an otherwise secure system. Written notes are bad security because it’s easy for someone to walk by, glance at the note, and copy your passwords. Even in a world without malice, the notes wouldn’t be safe: It’s too easy for paper notes to blow away and get lost, locking you out of your accounts. When it comes to password security, it’s best to take a vow of silence.

The Tao is like a snowflake: countless, unique.

When a website gets hacked, the consequences spill onto other websites. A leak on Netflix is a leak on Wells Fargo, for every member who uses the same password. Don’t make it easy for hackers. Use a different password for every account. If you think keeping track of multiple passwords is inconvenient, compare that with the inconvenience of identity theft.

The Tao is formless.

Use strong passwords, meaning passwords with uppercase and lowercase characters, numbers, and punctuation. Use at least 8 characters or more, and don’t use passwords that have personal meaning. If your password is something guessable, like your child’s birthday, then your accounts are easy to hack.

The Tao is ever-changing.

Keep up to date on the latest network security news. Subscribe to news sources such as Ars Technica. When a website that holds your personal data gets hacked, you’ll be ready to respond.

Master the Tao, or it will master you.

When you can’t remember an important password, your electronic workflow comes to a halt. What good are hundreds of ultra-secure passwords when you can’t remember them? Fortunately, password managers like RoboForm are a good compromise, encouraging strong passwords and relieving you of the burden of remembering them. Now you only have to remember one master password, and you’ll never lose the rest. Find the security balance that’s right for you, with RoboForm.
